What’s new

Claude Code 2.1.287 added mods. A mod is a plugin that contains a short JavaScript or TypeScript file. Claude Code runs that file when something happens, for example when Claude is about to use a tool or when you send a prompt.

A mod can watch the event, change it, or handle it itself. It can also draw a panel next to the chat and add its own slash commands. Some Claude Code features, such as the /diff screen, are now mods too.

Why it matters

You can add your own checks, panels and commands without waiting for a new Claude Code release. You can also describe the mod you want in a normal session, and Claude writes it for you.

A mod runs with your permissions. It can read your files, start programs and use the network. Install mods only from authors and marketplaces you trust.

How to try it

Update Claude Code to version 2.1.287 or later. To see which mods your session loaded, type /plugin. To read what a mod does before you install it, download its files and run this command in your shell: see the command below. The output lists the events the mod handles and what it asks Claude Code to do.

claude plugin validate ./some-mod
