Save the plan of long tasks
Planning with Files
A skill that saves the plan, findings and progress of a long task in plain files, so the agent does not lose its place when the chat gets long.
- Works with
- Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI
- Good for
- Everyone, Daily work and research, Build an app
What it does
The problem it solves
In a long chat, an AI agent can forget the first steps or repeat work. The context window, which is the agent's short-term memory, fills up.
What the skill does
The agent writes its plan, its findings and its progress into three text files on disk. When the chat becomes long or restarts, the agent reads the files and continues from the same point.
Why it helps non-developers
You can read the files too. They show what the agent plans to do and what it already did. This is easy to check and easy to correct.
Be careful
The skill adds files to your folder. The plugin route also adds hooks that run scripts at set times. Read them first.
How to install
npx skills add OthmanAdi/planning-with-files --skill planning-with-files -g/plugin marketplace add OthmanAdi/planning-with-files/plugin install planning-with-files@planning-with-filesHow to use it
Start a big task and ask the agent to plan with files. It writes task_plan.md, findings.md and progress.md in your project folder and updates them as it works. Open those files at any time to see where the work stands.
What to watch out for
- It writes three Markdown files into your project folder. Add them to .gitignore if you do not want them saved with your code.
- The plugin version also installs hooks, which are small scripts that run at set moments in a session. Read hooks/hooks.json before you enable it.

How we tested it
We installed it on an empty test computer on 12 Oct 2026. Installed and started in a clean test system. Not yet used in a real AI session.
We did not run a real task with it. We did not test the npx install or the language variants beyond the file check.
Technical details of the test
- Date
- 12 Oct 2026
- Method
- Installed the plugin with the Claude Code command line in a clean container with no account. The plugin showed as enabled, and the folder held 18 skills and 4 hook files. All skill files have a name and a description. The hooks did not run, because no session was started.
Checked again on 12 Oct 2026
