Design n8n automations
n8n-MCP
An MCP server by Romuald Czlonkowski that gives your agent the n8n node docs and templates, so it can design workflows. Docs mode needs no n8n account.
- Works with
- Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI
- Good for
- Build an app, Daily work and research
What it does
What it is
n8n is a tool to connect apps and build automations, for example: when a form is sent, add a row to a sheet and send a message. This MCP server teaches your agent about n8n: all node types, their settings and many templates.
Who it helps
People who want to describe an automation in words and let the agent draw the workflow.
How to start
Start in documentation mode. Ask the agent to design a workflow and review it. Import it into n8n by hand.
Be careful
If you give the agent an n8n API key, it can change real workflows. The author says: never edit production workflows directly with AI. Test with dummy data first.
How to install
npx n8n-mcpHow to use it
Register the server with your agent, with the setting MCP_MODE=stdio. Then ask for an automation, for example "design an n8n workflow that saves new form entries to a sheet". Review the workflow before you import it.
What to watch out for
- If you add an n8n API key, the agent can create and change workflows in your n8n. The author warns: never let the agent edit production workflows directly. Work on a copy.
- Automations can send emails and call other services. Test them with dummy data.
- A hosted option exists that sends your questions to the author's service.

How we tested it
We installed it on an empty test computer on 12 Oct 2026. Partly tested: installed in a clean test system, but its main features need an account or key we did not use.
This tested documentation mode only. The tools that create or run workflows need an n8n API key and were not tested. The README points to a separate guide for the self-host steps; the install line comes from that guide.
Technical details of the test
- Date
- 12 Oct 2026
- Method
- In a clean container with no account we started npx -y n8n-mcp, sent the MCP initialize and tools/list requests, and it answered with 7 tools (documentation, node search, node details, validation and templates). We also registered it with claude mcp add -e MCP_MODE=stdio, and claude mcp list reported it as connected.
